Wellness Center Frequently Asked Questions

Keiser University offers solution focused, Outpatient Therapy sessions. Services are designed to support students’ personal growth and development, and to provide students with an opportunity to understand emotional wellness. Counseling helps individuals develop coping skills that will assist them during and beyond their college years. In addition, our services offer students a place to process stressors and challenges in a safe, secure, and confidential place.

The counseling center provides individual counseling to help promote personal and academic success. The Wellness Center will also provide referrals to students in the event that we are unable to offer appropriate clinical services.

The counseling center is open 5 days a week, Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm by appointment. Weekend and evening hours may be available by request.

How to Book an Appointment ?

Students can schedule an appointment in a few ways. They can reach out via phone at 561.478.5524 , via the Meta-app for mental health, they can email the Wellness Center directly at [email protected] and they can stop by the office at Lakeside Suite 108.

Coaches, professors, and other Keiser staff members can refer students to the counseling center as well. You can reach out on a student’s behalf, or you can encourage the student to reach out.

What information is needed in order to book an appointment?

In order to schedule a therapy session, students need to provide their full name, date of birth, a contact number or email address, and a copy of their insurance card in order to verify their insurance benefits. Many students have health insurance that covers the the cost of the session. Students without insurance may qualify for free services. All of this information is provided during the 15 min consultation appointment that can be scheduled or take place during open office hours.

In the event of a crisis/emergency

Crisis intervention differs from outpatient therapy services in that Crisis counseling focuses on short-term strategies during and immediately after the experience of trauma or crisis. Crisis counseling is often followed by long term therapy to improve the client’s mental health and personal wellbeing. The counseling center offers both short-term and long-term therapy options.

What happens after a coach or student reaches out for services via the contact information above?

If a coach or other staff member reaches out on a student’s behalf, we will then contact that student directly. We reach out via email and phone number to gather information from the students. Due to the confidentiality laws regarding personal health information, the appointment must be scheduled by the person seeking mental health services. After services begin a confidential release of information can be signed by the student, allowing us to speak with the student’s professors and coaches.

How long will it take to get an appointment?

After the Wellness Center receives a referral, or a student reaches out for services, we respond within 24 business hours, in most cases we respond the same day the student or staff members requests services. Typically, students can expect to receive an appointment within a few days of the initial request.

Who should I contact for additional questions?

Please feel free to reach out to Kate directly if you have additional questions.

Seahawk to Seahawk
Peer Support Program

Peer Supporters serve as an additional on-campus resource. They are fellow students who offer help and support when you want to talk with someone. This could be for company, if you are working on big decisions, feeling down, lonely, homesick, overwhelmed, frustrated, concerned, anxious, or confused, or if you do not know where to find assistance for academic issues, mental health concerns, or other challenges.

Should you need and wish to be connected to specific resources, from tutors to mental health professionals, they can assist with this as well.

Peer Supporters have received additional education and training in such areas as active listening, setting boundaries, determining risk factor, considerations of diversity and inclusion, and mental health and general wellness topics to serve as Peer Supporters. They are non-judgmental, supportive, helpful listeners and problem solvers. They are not professionals, though, and do not provide counseling.

Peer Supporters share their experience and provide tips and encouragement. They serve as mentors in terms of adapting to college life, developing good study habits, coping with the stresses of college, and learning about campus culture and the surrounding community.

Interested in joining the Seahawk to Seahawk team? The yearlong program includes:

•   Ongoing education and training.
•   The opportunity to develop your leadership, coping, communication, and group facilitation skills.
•   Support from supervisors and peers throughout the program

If you would like to connect with a Peer Supporter email Dean Berry or Dr. Schupper.
